Trivial Matters from Feb 13, 2007 @ The BU Pub/Club

This was my 2nd appearence as the trivia master at the BU Pub. There were a lot more teams this time around. As a consequence there was a lot more bitching. The query ppl seemed most upset about was the The MBTA Bus Routes Bonus Round.

Just click on a question to reveal its answer.

1st Quarter

Acadia National Park, Maine

(just about everyone got this one)

Wilson, Theodre Roosevelt, Jimmmy Carter

(most got this, Ford was a noteable inccorect answer)

Sports: In the Tour de France who wears the "polka dot" jersey?

The king of the mountain

(many answers along the correct theme were accepted)
(many people thought this was for the last rider)

Astronomy: After the sun and moon, What is the brightest permanent object in the sky?

Venus

(Polaris seemed to be a popular wrong choice)

1990: Goodfellas, 1991: Cape Fear, 1999: Bringing out the Dead, 2002: Gangs of New York

(I was shocked how many teams couldn't get the obvious ones)

2nd Quarter

Computers: What year did Microsoft first introduce the windows operating system?

(I think only one team got this)

Presidential Candidates: Barak Obama, the Junior Senator from Illinois was born in which state?

Hawaii

(I was surprised that abou 2/3's got this one)

Medicine: What is the most common non-skin cancer in American men?

Prostate

(surprisingly, no teams answered skin cancer)

Utah

Guessing Game

This is played Price Is Right style—closest guess without going over

How many licensed cabs are there in the city of Boston?

1825

(The closest guess was 1350, the worst was 77)
I just called BPD hackney division and asked them then answer for this. The woman on the phone yelled across the room to get the answer told me, and hung up, all the while displaying remarkable uninterest in any of it.

3rd Quarter

I think this is where things started to get a little too hard—stupid BU kids.

Boston Celtics: What was the last year that the Celtics won the NBA finals? (this quiz was given in Feb 2007)

1986

Tomorrow's date in History: In 1859 what state was admitted to the union as the 33rd state?

Oregon

(just a handful of teams guessed this)

Spices of the World: What country is the world's largest producer of vanilla?

Madagascar

(no one knows how to spell Colombia [no 'u'])

Geography: What is the longest river in Asia?

Yangtze

(I also accepted yellow river [though through later research I realized that the yellow river is a completely different river-oops])
(only one team missed this, about the only sure fire question of the night—maybe because I accepted the wrong answer?)

Bonus Round: Bus Routes of Boston

Name the usual terminus of the below bus routes.
Minus one point for incorrect answers.

Answers for Bus Routes of Boston

Route & Direction Terminus
57 inbound Kenmore
1 inbound Dudley Station
86 inbound Sullivan Station
66 outbound Harvard Square
8 inbound Kenmore
39 outbound Forest Hills Station

(This was a disaster for teams. The best score was 3. Several teams got negative points, which I graciously counted as zero)

4th Quarter

The Beanpot: What school holds the most Women's Beanpot titles? (again, answers are c. 2007)

Northeastern

Units and Measures: In typography the Desktop Publishing Point represents what fraction of an inch?

1/72

(one team got this and there was an audible groan when I gave out this answer I tried making it better by explain that there are 12point in a pica, but I think that still seemed too esoteric–oh well)

Botany: The plant Camellia sinensis is used to make what common beverage?

Tea

(Camomille Tea was not an acceptable answer-I got booed when I said that. I so badly wanted to get into an argument about that with someone)
(about 1/3 of teams got it, but camomille tea was by far the most popular choice)

Famous Slogans: What slogan can be found on the masthead of the NY Times?

All the news that's fit to print

(I was very surprised that ~1/3 missed what I thought was a gimme)

2 Minute Drill: Retired Jersey Numbers

Here's the deal with this. There is an easy and a hard question. You may answer the easy question for three points. Or you may answer the easy and hard questions for seven points. The only rub is that if you go for both and miss one of them you get zero points. You must decide if you are only going for the easy question before you hear the hard question.

Easy Question

What number is retired by every major league team?

Jackie Robinson's 42

(everyone got this one)

Hard Question

What North American professional team has more numbers retired than any other?

Celtics with 22

(Only 2 teams managed the hard one. Yankees was most common wrong answer.)
